At the end of a long lakeside mountain road near Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest is the charming Blue Boar Inn. The lodge was built in 1950 by Cincinnati brewery owner Fred Bruckman as a vacation retreat. The lodge was eventually sold to its current owners Valjawan Deer and Pamela Glenn who completed an extensive renovation in 1998 that resulted in a more stylish country house hotel. The Inn's fine dining options can be experienced pond side or in the elegant dining room. Picnic lunches are available for those heading out for a woodlands meander or lake excursion. The Inn offers rental of canoes, kayaks and pontoon boats or you may launch or dock your watercraft at the Blue Boar Inn's Lake Santeetlah landing. Nearby are the scenic Cherohala Skyway and the Nantahala Forest that surrounds the remnant of an original Appalachian cove hardwood forest. Named for the poet and World War I veteran, Joyce Kilmer, the forest features yellow poplars that are over 20-feet in circumference and stand over 100-feet tall. Most are over 400 years old.
